For most of us, it would probably involve considering a greener mode of transportation, and that can be achieved changing to a smaller capacity vehicle or even using public transport always, with a bicycle to help get you around. What happens when you live in hilly areas like San Francisco, and you don’t want to end up at work as though you just ran a marathon with sweat dripping all over? Why not consider Greenlight Bikes’ line of Kalkhoff bicycles and e-bikes that are due to hit North America. Just in case Kalkhoff doesn’t ring a bell, this company is one of Europe’s largest and most recognized bicycle brands.

These pedal assist electric bicycles are also known as pedelecs or e-bike, when based on an electric motor to supplement the power of a pilot is applied to the pedals, resulting in a smooth and predictable growth. It works much the same as a normal bicycle, but pulling in elements of comfort, fun and efficiency every time you run errands, travel or a relaxing trip.

You know how Europeans and Americans love to be different from each other despite sharing similar roots? Well, the same applies to these bikes – the majority of e-bikes Stateside use front and rear hubs and many of which require the use of an accelerant. On the Kalkhoff pedelec system will be implemented to perfection from the center power electric motor mounted directly to the drive train of the bicycle. The level of attendance of the engine depends on the amount of energy generated by the rider while pedaling. The inclusion of a torque sensor continuously measures the power of the rider, while the motor provides a pre-selected percentage of additional assistance ranging from 50% to 150% above what the driver is able to produce, helping you reach at its destination, the sweat-free or face difficult hillsides without gasping away. Able to last up to 50 miles per charge, electric bicycles are $ 2,499 to $ 3,399 in terms of pricing.

Is anyone buying these things? That’s a pretty hefty price for a pedal assist. I used an e-bikekit conversion for my mountain bike and it costs me less than $1000. Plus I like my bike so I didn’t want to get rid of it when I decided to go electric.

Got something to say?
